What is Domain Tools?
Domain Tools gathers the standard domain diagnostics in one place: WHOIS registration data, DNS records, SSL certificate details and IP information for any domain. It is free on every plan.
How to use Domain Tools
From signup to shipped fix, this is the whole loop.
- 1Create a free accountSign up in under a minute. No credit card is required, and your first site scan works without an account at all.
- 2Point Domain Tools at your siteEnter the URL or domain you want to analyze. You can run it on your own site or on a competitor's.
- 3Let it pull the live dataDomain Tools fetches the current state of the page or domain and runs its checks. Most runs finish in seconds.
- 4Read the ranked findingsResults come back ordered by impact rather than by count, so the issue costing you the most traffic is at the top, not buried under cosmetic warnings.
- 5Ship the fix, then re-runApply the recommended change, or let Roger AI draft it for you, then run the tool again to confirm the issue is resolved and track the improvement.
Why Domain Tools matters
Domain-level facts sit underneath everything else and are usually only consulted when something has already broken. Knowing when a domain expires, whether its DNS resolves as intended, and whether its certificate is about to lapse prevents a category of outage that takes a site down completely rather than degrading it gradually.
Search is no longer only Google. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude answer a growing share of queries by reading the same pages crawlers do, then citing a handful of sources. SEO Roger keeps both audiences in view: the classic SERP and the AI answer, from one workspace.
Who it's for
- In-house SEOs who need crawling, indexing and structured data without stitching three tools together
- Agencies and consultants producing client-ready findings, fast
- Founders and marketers who want the fix, not just the metric
Domain Tools in depth
Expiry is the failure nobody plans for
A lapsed domain registration takes everything offline at once: site, email, everything depending on the name. It happens to real businesses regularly, usually because renewal notices went to an address nobody monitors after a staff change. Checking expiry dates and enabling auto-renewal is a two-minute task that prevents the most complete outage available.
DNS problems look like site problems
When a site is unreachable for some users and fine for others, DNS is a frequent culprit: a stale record after a migration, an inconsistent configuration between providers, a missing record for a subdomain. Because propagation is gradual and cached, these problems present as intermittent and confusing rather than as a clean failure, and checking the records directly resolves the ambiguity quickly.
Certificates and what an expiry costs you
An expired SSL certificate produces a full-page browser warning that stops essentially all traffic, and it affects search too, since HTTPS is a confirmed if lightweight ranking signal and a browser interstitial destroys any engagement. Most certificates now renew automatically, and most failures come from automation that silently stopped working, so checking the actual expiry date rather than trusting the automation is the useful habit.
Checking a domain before you buy it
If you are considering an expired or aftermarket domain, its history matters enormously. Registration age, previous ownership changes and hosting history give you the beginnings of a picture. A domain previously used for spam can carry problems that follow it, and the cheapest time to discover that is before purchase rather than after you have built on it.
Domain Tools questions, answered
Does it cost credits?
No. Domain Tools is free on every plan.
Why is WHOIS data hidden for some domains?
Privacy protection, which is now the default for many registrars, and privacy regulation which restricts publishing personal registration details. You will still see registration and expiry dates and the registrar; the registrant's personal information is usually redacted, and that is normal rather than suspicious.
Does domain age affect rankings?
Barely, and less than folklore suggests. Google has said domain age itself is not a meaningful factor. Older domains often perform better because they have accumulated links and content over years, which is a correlation with age rather than a benefit of it. Buying an old domain does not buy you ranking ability.
How long do DNS changes take to propagate?
Anywhere from minutes to 48 hours, governed by the TTL on the records and by caching along the way. If you know a change is coming, lowering the TTL a day beforehand shortens the transition considerably.
Does HTTPS affect rankings?
Yes, as a confirmed but lightweight signal. The stronger practical argument is that browsers now warn users away from insecure sites, so the cost of not having it is measured in lost visitors rather than lost ranking points.
Can I check any domain?
Yes, any registered domain, including competitors. All of this is public infrastructure data.
