What is llms.txt Generator?

Why llms.txt Generator matters
Traditional robots.txt tells crawlers what they may not fetch. It has no way to say what your site is about or which pages best represent it. The llms.txt proposal is an attempt to fill that gap with a curated, machine-readable summary. Whether it becomes a standard is not yet settled, but the file is cheap to produce and the exercise of writing it is useful on its own terms.
Search is no longer only Google. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude answer a growing share of queries by reading the same pages crawlers do, then citing a handful of sources. SEO Roger keeps both audiences in view: the classic SERP and the AI answer, from one workspace.
Who it's for
- Brands that want to be recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, not just ranked in Google
- In-house SEOs who need visibility inside AI answer engines without stitching three tools together
- Agencies and consultants producing client-ready findings, fast
- Founders and marketers who want the fix, not just the metric
llms.txt Generator in depth
The adoption caveat, stated plainly
llms.txt is a community proposal, not a ratified standard, and no major AI company has publicly committed to reading it. Anyone telling you it is required, or that adding it will get you cited, is overstating what is currently known. The honest case for adding it is that it costs very little, it cannot hurt, and if adoption arrives you are already prepared. That is a reasonable bet, not a guaranteed return.
What goes in it
The format is markdown: a heading with your site name, a short description of what the site is and who it serves, then curated sections of links with a sentence explaining each. The value comes from curation. A list of every URL you own is a sitemap and communicates nothing about priority. Twenty links representing your genuinely most useful, most representative content is a statement about what matters.
Writing it is a clarifying exercise
This is the part with certain value regardless of adoption. Being forced to describe in two sentences what your site is for, and to choose the twenty pages that best represent it, surfaces uncomfortable questions. Teams routinely discover their most important topic has no strong page, or that they cannot describe their own positioning concisely. That insight is worth the twenty minutes even if no engine ever reads the file.
Keeping it honest
Overstating what your site covers is counterproductive. A file claiming comprehensive coverage of ten subjects you address superficially invites a system to fetch those pages and find nothing substantial, which is worse than not claiming them. Describe what you genuinely cover well, list the pages that genuinely deliver it, and revisit the file when your content strategy actually changes.
llms.txt Generator questions, answered
Does this cost credits?
No. The generator is free on every plan.
Do AI assistants actually read llms.txt?
There is no public commitment from the major AI companies to read it, and you should be sceptical of claims that it is being used at scale. It is a proposal with community interest rather than an adopted standard. Add it because it is nearly free and positions you for possible adoption, not because it will change your visibility today.
Where does the file go?
At the root of your domain, served as plain text at the /llms.txt path, in the same way robots.txt sits at /robots.txt.
Does it replace robots.txt or a sitemap?
Neither. robots.txt controls crawler access and is genuinely honoured by compliant bots. An XML sitemap lists your URLs for search engines and is well established. llms.txt is a proposed descriptive layer that does neither of those jobs. Keep the two that work and treat this as an addition.
How many links should it contain?
Enough to represent your site well and few enough that the selection means something, which in practice is usually somewhere between ten and fifty. Curation is the entire point. Including everything defeats the purpose.
How often should I update it?
When your content genuinely changes shape: a new major section, a repositioning, a set of important new pages. It describes structure and priority rather than inventory, so it does not need updating every time you publish.
