How to use the Image Optimization
What it does
The Image Optimization tool reviews every image on a page and flags problems that hurt performance and SEO. It checks for missing alt text, oversized file sizes, dimensions larger than needed, and outdated formats, then recommends fixes such as compression, resizing, and switching to modern formats like WebP or AVIF.
How to use it
- Open Image Optimization under Tools.
- Enter the URL of the page you want to audit.
- Click Analyze Images.
- Review the per-image findings in the results table.
Reading the results
The table lists each image with its file size, dimensions, format, and alt text status. Images flagged in red are the biggest opportunities, usually large uncompressed files or photos served much larger than they display. Missing or empty alt attributes are called out separately, since alt text matters for both accessibility and image search. For each issue, compress the file, resize it to its display dimensions, convert it to a next-gen format, and add descriptive alt text. Re-run after uploading optimized images to confirm the gains.
Credits
The Image Optimization tool is free and costs 0 credits. Tip: fixing your largest hero image often produces the single biggest load-time improvement, so start there.
